I was burning a dvd, and apparently took up the remaining space on my hard drive...now my computer won't boot---just get the black screen with the blinking cursor in the upper-lefthand corner.

I've tried to press F8 to try booting in "Safe Mode" but am not able to---is there any way to gain access to the hard drive to delete files to free up space so the computer can boot on its own? I was able to access the F1 Setup menu, but don't think there's anything that I can do from that menu...please help!

If you have FAT32 format HD, you can use Win98 boot disk or similar.

Using DOS commands you find directory that has temp DVD file on it,
C:\Documents and settings (cd \docum~1) \Your_User_Name\Local Settings\Temp
then Del *.*.

I must have NTFS file system to have a file over 4 GB, so ignore the FAT32
stuff above.

For some crappy reason, booting off WinXP CD, revovery console will only
allow access to C:\Windows directory but that may be enough if you can find
unneeded files in \Temp and \....tmp directorys and delete, things may work.

I have heard that booting off Win2000 CD will give full access to NTFS. Also
look for other boot disk utilities that will give you access to NTFS files
so you can delete enough for Windows to start.

You may want to buy new larger HD and Ghost or Drive Image data from old HD
as a possible fix.

Thanks for all the info! Only question is how do I enter in DOS commands if the computer won't boot? I'm running XP Pro...

Thanks for all the info! Only question is how do I enter in DOS commands
if the computer won't boot? I'm running XP Pro...Enter BIOS and set boot order so will boot off floppy or CD ROM first. Then
insert bootable floppy or CD ROM and start up computer.

I was at httP://bootdisk.com and made the Bart_PE bootable CD. It was a lot
of work. I was able to boot off this CD and run the A43 file manager utility
and successfully delete all files in my C:\Documents and Settings\Kent\Local
Settings\Temp folder. This is where I suspect the file resides that needs to
be deleted.

This BartPE CD is the coolest. I have been searching for something like this
to repair NTFS installations for a long time.

Run the PEBuilder.exe with WinXP SP1 bootable CD in drive to create .ISO
image file and burn to CD using Nero Burning.
