So, the duty plus the VAT work out as 181% of the cost of the fuel itself. I'm surprised there haven't been riots before now ! VAT is, of course, charged not only on the fuel but on the duty as well - a tax on a tax ! On the above figures, by my reckoning, the VAT should be less than 24p but these are officially quoted figures and I'm not sure where the extra comes from.
And, as we all know, prices have gone up further since those figures.
Seems not enough people turned up to protest said one sunday paper last week. Whoever is in power will tax fuel to the hilt, if they dont get us through fuel duty they would only hike up income tax by 2 or 3 pence, would people protest over that?
