Word 2007

When a Word document is saved on a network drive and one user has it
open, the other users can only view the document in a read-only
format.

Until recently, I could swear that these other users could use
features like Find and Outline View to navigate in the read-only
document. But now I can't do so. Or am I mistaken about what I
thought I used to be able to do? Is there any way to set what can and
cannot be done in such a read-only document? Thanks.

Usually, the features you mention should be available in a read-only
document. Are you sure the document isn't opening in protected view?

How about Save As? Is that command available?

Thanks for your help.

I've discovered that the easy resolution is to select from the initial
dialog "create a local copy and merge your changes later" and not
"open a read-only copy". The "create..." choice allows Ctrl-F etc.

To answer one of your questions, Save As is available with "open a
read-only copy".

What is "protected view" and how would it be invoked if it was never
set?

I'm glad you found a workaround.

Rereading your original message I see that you are using Word 2007, and
Protected View may have been introduced in Word 2010. It adds a level of
protection in the sense that documents you open from an e-mail (for example)
can't be edited, just viewed; you have to turn off the protection before you
can work with the document. (Protected view is managed in the Trust Center
Settings, which you can access via the Options dialog box.)
