Hi,

Just got a real education in printers today. My Epson C62 ran out of color
ink. No problem - I thought - I'll just run the printer in monochrome only
with the new black ink cartridge installed a few weeks ago. Apparently,
the company felt otherwise and the printer refused to function at all
without a new color cartridge.

I see no valid technical reason to stop me from running monochrome only
mode. I also see no valid reason for me to continue to support a company
who builds products like this. I've just bought my last product from these
people.

Can you recommend some good printer brands/models where the companies do not
play this kind of game?

OK,

I can see why you're angry. Because the printhead of an Epson is built
into the printer there are different physical problems that happen unlike
using an HP or Lexmark which come with a new print head with every new
cartridge. The reason Epson wants you to put in a new cartridge at the empty
point is so the nozzles for that color do not dry up and cause a clog. It's
imperitive to keep ink on those nozzles rather than air. I agree with you
that it's an annoyance but it's the design of the printer that necessitates
one from running it with an empty cartridge.
There are ways around this that will temporarily solve your problem. You
could buy a reset chip device (about $25) that will let you zap the onboard
cartridge chip to make the printer think a new cartridge is in there, and
you can go on merrily printing until you can get out to the store to get
yourself a new cartridge, or refill it yourself, should you want to go that
route. However, I would suggest until you have either decided to get rid of
the printer, or want to live with it, that you get a fresh supply of ink on
the head. The printer was cheap enough to buy. Now Epson wants to reclaim
their loss with those rather pricey cartridges.

A few years ago, I was told Lexmark was having quality problems. Anyone
familiar with their current quality? What about experiences with HP?
