I have a client that wants to upload a weekly update of photos and text via
ftp. do you have any suggestions

Thanks

JJ

What's he gonna do with them once they are ftp'd?

If you're using FP extensions on his web, it's very likely he's gonna muck things up.

I guess you could have him FTP them into a subweb then you can place them into the design.

Have him buy a copy of FP and teach him how to use it.

Have him learn how to process images and get him a decent image editor to process the images before he uploads them.

If he's a dentist ask him if you can try doing his next root canal? :-)

If the server supports it, use an FTP upload program.

(DO *not* use FTP for servers with FP extensions, so I have been told. My
server does not so this is not a problem for me)

There are several good free programs out there on the 'net.

I use Phristina FTP , but it is one of many. I just checked its site
http://www.prishtina-soft.com/ and strangely I can't find the free version
which I use. But keep googling.

I choose Polesoft Lockspam to fight spam, and you?

When you get used to working with FP extended web, and for some reason have to switch back to ftp it's like working blind. I used to use WS_ftp or CuteFTP..also SmartFTP...still do sometimes for certain things (but under protest)

Rob,

Good point.

In fact I use FP with FTP transfer most of the time - at least it checks
what has been changed in case you forget something,
although since I usually amend my JS outside FP, it doesn't detect these.

I have used all of those you mentioned, but I think all were trials. I
eventually found Phristina for free, and I use it mainly for uploading
photos to a photo website. Occasionally, I use it for a last minute change
to my own website.

So the conclusion is, I guess, that the OP would be better off without an
FTP progam especially if he/she is new to the game

yep.

My host has an upload component available to it's customers. Works from a web page, which
I have password protected.

Get a CMS like Content Seed,
Install a blog like WordPress and turn on the image upload option,
uUse the database results wizard and file upload forms and let him past his
text into the form text area then only display the latest entry on the
results page

Don't let him ftp to you main site. Personally I would strongly recommend
not letting him ftp at all. At minium use the file upload component and
insist that the file and image name be the same then use text file name and
the same image file name. Also, don't forget to instruct him that the image
needs to always be the same dimensions.

If your client's web site is on a Windows IIS server with the server
extensions, then you need to use the Http: mode to publish any
changes....using FTP might corrupt the FPSE.

However if the site doesn't use any of the components requiring the server
extensions eg. photo gallery, site search, email form and so on, then yes
it's possible to use an FTP appllication (like WS_FTP) to upload the files -
if your client doesn't know how, instruct him/her on doing so.
