FTP will not work on my laptop from a LAN connection. I
can login to the server but cannot list or transfer files.
It works just peachy if I am connected via dialup.
Laptop was originally ordered without ethernet. Also, I
get a message during boot that says file cbaxfr.dll cannot
be found in the WINNT path.

Any ideas?

Try setting your ftp client to use "PASV" mode transfers.

have tried PASV without success. even if I do ftp from the command
prompt, I can login to the server, but as soon as I send a list (dir)
command, it hangs. It's like it's not establishing a good data
connection. CuteFTP and FTP from the command prompt behave the same.

II may be wrong but doesn't cbaxfr.dll part of Intel's Landesk or network
manager? If so, you could search your harddrive for the file and try
copying it to your WINNT folder. Or you could uninstall landesk and
reinstall it.

Please disregard the above comments if I am wrong about the origin of
cbaxfr.dll. I just recall that landesk used this file.
