I'm trying to setup Guild FTP on windows XP home and I've gone through
the help tutorial and I can connect to the server from my own computer
(ftp://localhost) but it doesn't work from other computers. I get the
message: Failed to connect to the remote host 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'
Winsock error code 10060. Error description: A connection attempt
failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a
period of time, or established connection failed because connected
host failed to respond.

I have the windows firewall on but have allowed a FTP server but it
still doesn't seem to work from other computers. Any ideas??? Thanks
for the help - it's greatly appreciated.

I tested it from my own computer that is hosting the ftp server so that
worked, but any other computer doesn't work. I don't have a network
either so I don't have a router. I'm just trying to share some stuff
between home and work. Thanks again for the help.

Where did you test this from? a computer outside of your network?
Are you using a router? if so, make sure you forwarded port 21 to your
internal IP.

You have several issues that need to be addressed.
1. Since you are a home user I am expecting that you have a residential
broadband internet connection. This being the case you will have a
dynamic IP address. To get around this you will need to setup a dynamic
DNS client. Some of the places that will do this are dynamicdns.org or
no-ip.com. Once you have setup the account and configured the client to
update the dynamic DNS servers go to whatismyip.com. This web site will
list your CURRENT IP address. Now go to start-->Run and type cmd. Type
the following ping HOSTNAME where hostname is the name you assigned
with the dynamic DNS software. The IP address should match between what
it says in the command prompt window and the whatismyip web site. You
should be able to perform FTP to your home computer now.

If it does not work:

1.Your dynamic DNS client is not setup properly.
2.Your Windows firewall configuration is not correct.
3.Your office may have explicitly denied port (FTP Control) 21 from
exiting your work network.

Final Notes;
Connecting a computer to the internet over a broad band connection with
out a firewall is not a good idea. If you are going to have a broadband
connection, purchase a firewall. Windows is full of well know security
holes that script kiddies run against entire segments of broadband
networks all of the time.
