OT? Maybe. But........

Where can I find an online source to get an education in the world of FTP
stuff? I've never done/used those as info sources, and figure it's time to
start.

I plugged in every twist I could think of into several search engines, and
all I could find were long lists of software. No tutorials.

Have you looked in Help and Support? Click Start and select Help and Support. Enter FTP in the search box and click the green arrow. Under the suggested topics results read the entries for Ftp subcommands and Ftp.

FTP is nothing more than a transfer protocol for transfering ascii and binary data over the internet. There are many GUI based applications that allow you to browse FTP folders in a manner similar to Windows Explorer. These programs send the ftp commands back and forth to the server in response to your actions (list folder, get file, put file, delete file, etc).

FTP itself is just a protocol. It will lend no more info than whatever is available on the FTP server to which you connect. There are better protocols available if it is information you are looking for. Much of the information on the internet is available of HTTP, output of which is rendered most useful in a web browser such as Interent Explorer.

If you want the FTP spec, see http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc959/Overview.html.
