I have WS_FTP v8.5.
My question is this. If two people, accross the states have the same FTP
program, can we see each others shared folder... as long as we give each
other the correct IP Address?

If so, can you help me set this up.
Thanks

I don't know if WS includes a server, (A quick look at their website says
no.) but you need to have an FTP "server" running on each machine. You could
setup IIS on your machines or if you want something simpler, FileZilla is
pretty easy to setup. They make a nice client too. (Freeware)

Hello,

Thank you for posting.

According to my knowledge, WS_FTP v8.5 is just a FTP client.

If you install a FTE server on the two machines and let the remote people
know the IP address of the FTP server, they can access the shared folders
each other. Certainly, proper permissions are required.

The only things you need to do are:
1. Make sure if they can access each other. (They all have public IP
address.)
2. Install the FTP server on both two machines.

If you have anything unclearly, please feel free to let me know.

I downloaded a free version of FileZilla but not sure what port to set it
too.
This version is .67 (not even to version 1 yet). I this what your talking
about. I can't find documentation that tells me how to share a folder or
the logic in setting the port number. I've tried using my IP address and it
says it can't connect.

Let me know what I need to do.

Where did you get that version? Version 0.9.18 is available here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=21558
If you accept the defaults during install, the server console will be
displayed after you click "Finish". I don't have it installed right now so I
forget the menu names, but one of the menus has a setting for "users". You
MUST add a user before you can share a folder. Once you add a user, the area
for adding folders for that user will become available in the same window.
As for the port number, the default is 21, I think you are probably talking
about the port number that the administration console connects on. Just
accept the default. (14121 ?) Unfortunately there is no help file, but I
have found the server to be quite stable and once configured, you can pretty
much forget it. Post back if you get stuck.

Thanks
It seems to be running. I have a folder shared but still need to figure out
how to connect to somebody else. That part should be easy. My buddy does
not have it hooked up yet so it may be a few days.
Will touch base with you again to let you know.

FileZilla Server is JUST a server. There is also a FileZilla client but I
think you already have WSFTP. You can test your install by using WSFTP to
access "localhost" or 127.0.0.1 using the user name you crated.

now

I'm able to connect using WS_FTP when I'm on the same computer that the
Server is running from.
However, when I go to my other computer (on the same network), I'm not able
to connect to the server. I will look it over more later.
