When IE shows an FTP folder, I assume it logs in as anonymous, but does it
give an email address?

The article at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=219287 will tell you not
only what email address is given by default, but also how to change it.

Brief overview: your personal information is not being given out to spammers
this way.

[Rhetorical aside: what kind of FTP sites are you visiting that you think
might be hosted by spammers? Do no business with spammers. None at all.
Spam works because there is a perception that one person in a few million
will buy, and the spammer believes they will profit enough from that one
person to pay for the few million messages they send out. If nobody buys
from spam, and the perception is that nobody would buy from spam, maybe that
will stop people from thinking it's a good idea to send spam.]
