I am trying to access a FTP and there is popup screen coming up and asking me
to put in a name and password. When I do this it will not accept the correct
info.
If I enter in the direct url to the ftp I can get in OK, and then if I save
to my favorites I get this popup screen.
I am using Windows XP SP2.
How do I bypass this screen and save it to my favorites.

How is the 'direct url' different from the first URL that doesn't work? If
the difference is the username and password are embedded, that surprises me
because that ability was disabled a while ago by a security fix.

Exactly what error message(s) are you seeing?

The difference is that when I enter the url such as
ftp://name:p[email protected] name.com/
I can get to the ftp and the url changes to company name, but if I save it
to my favorites the login and password screen pops up.
It is here that it will not recognize the name and password.

Hi,
So you'd rather not go to ftp.companyname.com and have to login right?

Right-click the favorite (shortcut) that you created, check Properties> URL
and see if the URL field has this ftp://name:p[email protected] If
not you can put that in the URL field.

Or, if you paste this ftp://name:p[email protected] into Start>
Run, it should stay in the Run MRU list so long as no one clears that list.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

I checked to see if the ftp address was in the properties, it was not. I
added it to the properties and tried to get to the site. It did not work.
But, I did turn off the Windows XP firewall and then tried it. Once it was
off I was able to get to the site, as of this moment.
Is there a way to do this with the firewall active?
I do have a stand alone on my PC but it couldn't hurt have the Windows one

Hi,
Good detective work! If you're running another firewall, you should be OK
disabling the XP firewall.

It's really unfortunate that everytime Microsoft tries do good it usually
ends up giving everyone headaches try to find a work around.
Maybe that's why more and more people are looking to other O/S like linux.

Hi,
Enhanced security often has a downside. ;-) But, there's some evidence
that the security features of XP SP2 have been helpful in slowing down the
spread of some types of malware, especially when less experienced users are
involved.
