Could someone explain to me the protocol used to download
files through IE. This is with specific reference to the
OPEN or SAVE AS dialogue that appears when you click on a
file to download. IS THIS FTP? or some other protocol? I
don't see how it could be HTTP as an EXE would not be
hypertext.

Thanks in advance

Hello Wayne,

Files can be downloaded over FTP or HTTP.
For example both paths would work:

ftp://ftp.domain.com/somefile.exe
http://www.domain.com/somefile.exe

Internet Explorer can not open an .exe file and display it in the browser
window, therefor you are prompted to "open" it or "save to".

Hope this helps.

How can I find out more about FTP online. I am trying to
teach my learners the difference between FTP and HTTP and
now I'm getting confused. From what you said before files
can be transferred by HTTP (downloaded), so why use FTP
(to download - I know that you can't upload via HTTP)?

Also, I have read a book that suggests that Microsoft
Online ClipArt is FTP'd from the site but from what you
said I think that it is actually HTTP!

Sorry to make a big issue but my learners questions get
harder each week.

Thanks

Hello Wayne,

A general search on one of the search engines for FTP and General Networking
should find you many resources.
