I've upgraded from Win95 to XP Home/SP1. I first ran the
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard on my old system
taking the default of everything. I have 5 Zip disks
(100MB ea.), full of .dat files. I expected to be able
to selectively reinstall, but I don't get an option to do
that. After the fifth disk has been in for a short time,
I get a message stating the wizard has an error, and
cannot continue. I've searched the KB, found 312965, and
from that found the Fastwiz.log file. In there is:

Module Error An error occurred while loading data.
Can't continue. [Error = 183
(B7h)]

Anyone have an idea what this means, or how to get
further, or how to be selective? Thanks.

It sounds like something got corrupted or you have reached a limit on the
number of files being transferred.

You can be selective about what files and settings are to be transferred,
but this selectivity has to be done when you are deciding what to include
from the old computer.

Thanks, Ronnie, for your response. As I mentioned in my first post, I had
seen the article 312965 in the Knowledge Base.
Based on what it said, I should not have run out of space, but what do I
know? I have 2.13GB free on my C: disk and 3.11GB free on my D: disk Since
D: has the most free space, it should have been used for the temporary
unpack of 1GB, and the C: should have been the final target for the 500MB
store from the zip disks. But as someone smarter than I says, "I could be
wrong, I usually am."

I sure wish I had seen the other article by Mr. Woodruff (I have the site
bookmarked, looks like lots of good leisure time reading/learning) before I
started this whole mess. I would have been selective in what I chose to
save. I just assumed I could be selective at the end as well as the
beginning. Now it appears I have 5 zip disks full of 'stuff', some of which
is gold, and most is probably junk. None of which I can get my hands on.

I have one possibility after reading Garys article. I'll create a new FAST
wizard disk to ensure I have the latest level of the code, and try one more
time. If this happens to work, I'll post the results to this site for
others. For now my advice is, if you're thinking of updating or upgrading,
learn all you can about the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, starting
with the link below in Ronnies reply.

Best of luck,
Stan

Thanks for the feedback and yes, please post your experience with this
process. You are very lucky that you still have the old computer to redo the
FAST, many users format the drive and sell the old system before they
realize that the FAST is not a typical backup program. :(

Well, Ronnie, I don't think I made myself real clear. I don't have the old
system. I formatted my HDD into two disks, a C drive with NTFS format for
the system, and a D drive, still with FAT for data. The only thing I have
is 5 zips full of ?????

I tried to create a new Wiz disk this afternoon, and kept getting a message
at the end that there was an error and please make sure the disk was
formatted and had at least 1.4MB of free space. I tried several disks,
including a brand new one and still got the error. In looking at the disks
they had files, a .exe and a .cab file. I double clicked on the .exe file
and the FAST wizard started up. Same as before, though, at the end of the
last disk I got an error. I monitored the C and D disks during transfer and
the D was the only one being used. It had 3.09GB free at the start and
2.58GB free when the program quit. I don't think there's a space problem.
I think the FAST wizard has trouble with EOF marks or something like that.

I also think someone, somewhere, has seen a similar problem, so I'm going to
archive my 5 zip disks for a while in hopes that someone will see this post
and come to my rescue.......I know the data I need is there, and I'm pretty
sure there is a way to 'fudge' the system to get it out. What is it????????

Stan

Try this.

Copy the contents of the 5 zip disks to a single folder on your D: drive. Go
into Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools and start the FAST from
there. Go through the menu to transfer the files and select the folder on
the D: drive for the target.

Ronnie, I must be snakebit or blind. I went through the operation as you
said, but never got a chance to specify a target.
I had already created a folder on the D: disk, but didn't have an
opportunity to specify it. What could I be doing wrong?

Start The FAST and click Next, Click New Computer and click Next. Select the
"I don't need a wizard disk, I have already collected my files and settings
from my old computer" option. On the next screen you should see a Browse
button, use this to point to the files on the D: drive.

Sorry, I asked a question then buried it in a tome.

How can I copy the 5 zips to a file on the HDD?

The .dat files on the zips all have the same name, so any copy I've tried
asks if I want to replace the one on the target file. Looks like FAST makes
a multi-volume sequential file, probably with special EOF marks telling
something like "continued" or "true EOF". That's just a guess, of course,
but the bottom line is I have no idea how to get around the FAST file build
scheme.

I thought you meant to use FAST to copy the files to the D: disk. Now I see
what you mean, but still have a question. How should I copy the files from
my zip disks to the D: disk. May seem like a stupid question, but I'm sure
there are ways to copy that will work and other ways that will............
Just trying to speed up the process before the thread runs off the right
side of the page %>] Or worse, you get tired of my inability, and quit
helping. I really do appreciate the time you've spent with me. I'm so sure
this can be done, I'll never quit. After all, I spent 2 months getting XP
installed and running, because I had the same feeling, that it could and
would, and it does, now that I have bad memory out of the computer. Still
have only 64MB, so it's a bit slow, but not even a burp or hiccup since I
pulled the bad memory. I think I'm finally going to have to activate.*grin*
I'm so good at installing, maybe I'll do that every 29 days instead.

Enough garp, please answer one more question, and perhaps I'll go away.

Thanks much,
Stan
