FSMO Placement

I am designing a Windows 2000 domain for approx. 120 users. All
servers and users will reside in one domain and one physical location.
I have got two domain controllers. Both will be Global Catalog. Is
there any sense in distributing certain FSMO's accross these two
servers or should I just keep all FSMO's on one server and transfer
them manually in case of a server crash?

What if the enviroment was more than 10 times as big: 1500 users and a
four or five domain controllers. All servers will be located in one
datacenter, users will be distributed over several offices but they
will all logon to a citrix farm located at the datacenter. (so the
user sessions are always "close" to the domain controllers, only ICA
will cross WAN links).

thanks,

Jeffrey

Take a look at this KB Article:

FSMO Placement and Optimization on Windows 2000 Domain Controllers
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;223346

We have the same setup as you, though we've been told FSMO Placement is not
critical in a single Domain...it's wise to be prepared in the event your
domain grows. We distributed the roles across 3 Domain Controllers following
the article above.

MJC gave you some good references.

There is no requirement to distribute FSMO in a single domain environment
and
no significant reason not to have both (all) DCs be GCs in a single small
domain.

By the time you have two domains in the forest, the Infrastucture masters
should
be separated from the GCs.

120 users is trivial for an AD domain on almost any conceivable supported
hardware.

3 DCs have been KNOWN to handle millions of users in PRODUCTION.
