Hello ...

Is anyone familiar with this printer? I've recently installed it on a
new computer -- a Hewlett Packard 515n. (It used to be installed on a
Hewlett Packard 501n. I'm having several "issues" ...

1. How do you keep the printer icon in the Taskbar? If I click on it
and click "Close," it disappears -- which of course makes sense. But
how do I get it back there again?

2. When this printer was installed on the 501n, I could right-click
on the printer icon in the Taskbar and it took me to the Toolbox. I
could easily obtain information about things like my ink levels, et
cetera.

This is no longer the case with this new installation. Now when I
click on the icon (once I figure out how to keep it there) it takes me
to the Printer Assistant. At least -- it used to. Now, it just gives
me a white screen and nothing happens. That's when I have to click
"Close" -- to get rid of the white screen. And then I don't know how
to get the icon back to the Taskbar.

3. When I go to the Printer Assistant, I cannot find out how to find
the place to check ink levels, for one thing. It tells me to go the
Taskbar (or I think it calls it Task Manager?) and right click. Yes
-- that's what I used to do. But that is no longer an option -- a
right click does not produce the Toolbox option at all any more.

Printer Assistant says to go to Toolbox. But I can't get to it that
way. So I've tried searching Printer Assistant. But what comes up in
Printer Assistant that refers to "Tools" does not have a category to
check ink levels.

This is very frustrating. It used to be quite simple before.

I would like to be able to figure out why I'm getting the white
screen, how to get the icon back to the Toolbar, and how to check ink
levels. I'd like to find the "old" Toolbox.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks very much ...

I haven't got a 920, but I used to have a 930 and now have a 5550. On my
5550 setup, if I were to close the system tray icon I would be able to
restart it via the Start Menu at

Start>Programs>Hewlett-Packard>HP Deskjet 5550 v7.1.0>taskbar icon

It should be restarting at boot up after closing also. Why close it anyway?
The system tray applet starts up at boot up via the registry entry
"HPDJ Taskbar
Utility"="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\spool\\drivers\\w32x86\\3\\hpztsb07.exe"
at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Also, the ink levels are viewable via the Printer Assistant in the Options
menu.
I hope you can relate some of this info to your 920 problem if no one else
can give you more specific info.

Steve ...

Thanks so much for this information

Can you tell me where in your Printer Assistant you find your Options
menu?

When I open my Printer Assistant, there's a photograph of the printer
and then the clickable options at that point are:

about
back

quick help
support
sortware & printing ideas
shopping
updates

search
print

I've done a good bit of exploring in these and also tried "search,"
but haven't come up with a way to check the ink levels via the Printer
Assistant.

Many thanks for any information/suggestions you might have!

Linda, Windows XP has the drivers for the 920c built into it. XP
works differently in most instances than other Windows versions. If
you used your original CD to install the drivers, chances are the
drivers were written for Windows 98.. You should not use that disk.
Go ahead and uninstall the current driver and also delete the folder.
You might have better luck in removing the HP software if you go
through the Windows Add/Remove Programs which you find in Control
Panel. I would then personally reboot the computer and let XP find
the printer and install the driver. If it doesn't for some strange
reason (we are dealing with a Microsoft product after all), then go
ahead and install the driver manually through the
Start/Settings/Printers and Faxes menu. Windows XP will not install
an icon in the Task Bar as the HP software did in older versions of
Windows. You will be able to access all the printer functions from the
Printers and Faxes menu though. Just right click on the 920c icon and
go to it's properties. There you will find variouse tabbed menus and I
believe you will find some of the Toolbox functions under the Services
tab. Hope this helps. Best regards.

Frank ...

Thanks so much for all this information and for taking the time to to
through it with me in detail. I'll have to print it out and then read
it carefully in order to make sure I follow it correctly when I decide
to try this again.

One quick thing I did try -- I right-clicked on my 920c icon in the
Printers and Faxes menu and what comes up is:

Printing Preferences
Pause Printing
Sharing
Use Printer Offline
Create Shortcut
Delete
Rename
Properties

I tried Properties, but couldn't come up with anything to check the
ink levels.

As I said, I need to read your instructions above in more detail, too.

Oh -- when I installed this printer on my other computer -- the HP
501n -- it also had Windows XP. I used the printer software disk and
as I recall, the Toolbox was present. Would there be something
different in this newer computer's version of Windows or how it's
cofigured, do you think?

Many thanks again ...

Linda

The options button is on the first page opened up when you click on Printer
Assistant in the right-clicked system tray icon. (5550 though). Seems it's
a bit different to your 920.

It may be different. And it may also be that the Printer Assistant
hasn't installed correctly.

For example, when I right-click on the printer icon in the system
tray, all that opens is a white screen.

I have to open the Printer Assistant from the desktop icon. And then
I get a page with options on the left-hand side.

Hmmm ...

Thanks for this information!
