I have just set up a new Dell laptop with a dial up connector for a club member.
But, if he opens the internet, completes the dialup and connection, he does not get the pop-up
reminder to disconnect the phone when he closes IE. If he opens Outlook Express and closes it last,
he does get the pop-up reminder.

I have a second club member that cannot get the pop-up reminder at all. However, this user can
really screw her machine for here to there with dumb things she does. She has had the PC for 2
years and has gone through 4 ISP's because "they" screw-up her machine or just charge too much.

On both machines, which are XP HE SP2 Dells, I have made sure the Advanced setting under Internet
Options - connections are set to "disconnect when no longer needed".

I have also checked the registry in HKCU\remote access\profile\{ISP} for EnableAutodisconnect value
of "01 00 00 00" setting
and the HDCU\software\microsoft\windows\current version\internet settings for the same value. Both
registry values are correct.

Any other suggestions? Both users are definitely well over 65 year old novices and have a hard time
remembering to right mouse click on the system tray connection icon to disconnect.

Hi Richard,
If you want the Pop-Up and that which you are after then Open the Control
Panel.
Right click the Modem and go through the settings, there should be a check
box for both issuing a Dial Window to click connect and the Other to show a
terminal window when disconnecting (I don't have an XP machine to give you
the precise steps) .
HTH.

Sorry Nass, but there is nothing there that even hints at controlling the disconnect reminder.

Third-party add-ons cause these symptoms.

For me it was the Alexa Explorer bar. But by the time I figured that out
I was so used to using OE's hangup prompt by setting Work Offline
with it that now I'm not even sure if the disconnect prompt still works
with IE7. ; )

Both users are definitely well over 65 year old novices and have a hard time

Tell them about the hangup prompt by using Work Offline in OE.
If they get into the habit of using it it won't matter whether they don't
get the prompt or even whether they bother to close all windows
as quickly as they might decide they were done with their connection...

Also, the timeout disconnect feature has always worked--often too well. ; }
E.g. there has always been a race condition between the showing
of that prompt and any incidental keystrokes you happened to be making
when it was scheduled to be shown. As a result if you press Enter
or the letter associated with the disconnect button you can get disconnected
prematurely. Otherwise by activating that disconnect feature they could
at least ensure that the modem would be hung up sometime after closing
all windows which had an association with the Internet or even after they had
wandered away from their computer when such windows were still open.

Hi Richard,
Click on Connections Tab then under:
Dial up and Virtual Network settings:
Say : DE COM
Click on the Settings button then on the DE COM properties setting window
click on Properties.
On the General Tab under the option for :
Connect using:
Standard Modem click on configure Button.
On the modem properties you will see these two check boxes:
[ ] Bring up terminal Window before dialing
[ ] Bring up Terminal window after dialing check both.
Also look on the Server Tab and the Scripting Tab.
HTH.

I don't have immediate access to the two problem computers, but in reviewing my computers (several)
I cannot find the references you mention. What version of Windows are you using?

I guess I don't know where to start.
If I go to modems in the Control Panel, I do not see a "connections tab".
If I go to my dialup connection icon in "Show all connections" and choose properties, I do not see a
"connections tab".
I have tried all the tabs and options in each.

What happen if you go through the IE properties then Connections Tab then
Settings>> Properties can you see any of what I mentioned.

Control panel >> Network and Internet Connections >> Internet Options.
On the IE click on the Connections Tab.

Okay, now I see where you are referencing. As I said in my first post, I had those boxes checked on
both machines and that does not work.
