I have two XP Home Edition PCs on a network with a
Netgear WGR614 54-g wireless router. One PC is hard-
wired and the other is wireless using a Netgear WG311 NIC
card. Internet access is fine on both PCs. From the
wired PC, I can see the wireless PC and access the Shared
Docs folder only. From the wireless PC, I can see the
wired PC on the network but cannot access it. I receive
the following error message:
----------------------------------------------------------
\\computer-name is not accessible. You might not have
persmission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.
Logon failure: the user has not been granted the
requested logon type at this computer.
----------------------------------------------------------
Furthermore, on the wireless PC, I've shared My Documents
but receive a similar message when trying to access the
shared folder from the wired PC. I don't recall the
exact message but it was similar in it's reference to
access permissions.
In setting up the network, I have ensured the following:
- Both PCs have TCP/IP installed.
- Both PCs have Netbios over TCP/IP enabled.
- Both PCs have the same workgroup name.
- Both PCs have a unique computer name.
- Both PCs have network shares defined.
- Both NICS are on the same subnet (e.g. IP 192.168.0.*
subnet mask 255.255.255.0).
- MS Client and file & printer sharing are checked on
each NIC.
- Both NICs have their node type = anything except peer-
peer. I don't know how this was set, but I checked it
manually by using "ipconfig /all"
- XP's ICF firewall is permanently disabled.
- No 3rd party firewalls are installed.
While reading newsgroups and support forums, I've noticed
one peculiar thing about my XP Home Edition PCs .... they
do not have the option of "Use Simple File Sharing" under
Folder Options > View. Could this be a problem?
I've run out of ideas and do not know where else to
search for a solution. Any similar experience with this
problem and how to resolve it is much appreciated.
