frustrated with XP file sharing

I have had a home network for many years, with multiple
operating systems - MS and *Nix - and have always had great
success (I am a network admin. I typically work with
NT4/W2K/Linux/FreeBSD at the office.) A while back I
upgraded 4 computers at home to XP Pro and now every time I
try to access the shared folders on certain boxes I am
asked for a login/password, others don't ask for it. Prior
to upgrading the OS's of these machines they were Win98 and
all sharing worked great. No network properties where
changed. What should I be looking for to fix this problem?

unlike in 98, in XP (NT 5.1), you'll need to setup user
access rights for each and every user to each and every
resource. I know that's vague, but it should point you
in the right direction.

Mark,

well, you could switch everything to Simple File Sharing, then
you wouldn't have to do that.

Also make sure you turn off the Simple File Sharing
Option. By default this option is turned on and can
cause some problems with file sharing. Turn it off by
pulling up Explorer and go under TOOLS\FOLDER
OPTIONS\VIEW (tab) and at the bottom you'll see the check
box. Now you can adjust the permissions from the
security tab of the folder. Also make sure your not
using blank passwords, I've seen some issues with
accounts and blank passwords.

Good Luck,

David
