Perhaps your video card is overheating and/or dying.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

1. Open the computer with it off and unplugged. Blow out any dust
bunnies, paying particular attention to the fan on the video card if
there is one.

2. Start the computer but leave the case open. Observe all fans,
particularly the one on the video card if there is one.

3. If the machine still locks up, update the video card drivers. See
below for where to find drivers.

4. If updating the video drivers and cleaning out the machine doesn't
work, uninstall the video card and swap it out for a known-working one.
Now test. If all is well, discard the original video card.

Where to get drivers:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - Belarc Advisor
http://www.aumha.org/free.htm - Aida32 (hosted on Jim Eshelman's site)

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Thanks for your suggestions. I didnt mention: it is a Laptop OEM. Grafic
devise is
Radeon Mobility-P AGP 4x. I cleaned the van, but it does not help.
I looked for driver updates at ATI-website, but I could not find a relevant
update, I could not find any information about the devise Model.
I go to download the System inventory programm next week. If you have an
alternative idea where I can get the update, let me know.
Thanks for your help

This is why including all pertinent information in the first post is A
Good Thing. Saves everybody's time all around.

Since you have a laptop, the possibility that the graphics chip is dying
and/or overheating is quite high. You would only get drivers at the
laptop mftr.'s website, not at ATI.

So go to the laptop mftr.'s tech support site for your specific model
machine and try the drivers there. If that doesn't work, you have a
hardware problem and since this is a laptop you can't fix this
yourself. Contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support for
repair/replacement.
