Frozen mouse after Vista upgrade

Upon upgrading to Vista, my mouse stopped working. I have installed and
uninstalled it and tried both a PS/2 mouse and a USB. After reading of other
related issues on here I thought to completely uninstall all of the original
mouse software to make sure it did not conflict with Vista. According to
Logitech, there is no current Vista driver for my mouse but if you uninstall
the mouse software Vista's generic drivers should work. Not for me. Vista
sees the mouse and says it is working and there is power to it. It just
doesn't work. Also, when I look at the driver info for the mouse in device
manager it shows it is using a Logitech driver, not a Microsoft driver and I
can't seem to change this. Any suggestions? I would buy another Vista mouse
if I was sure it would solve the problem but it seems one of the 2 I have
should work. Both are optical by the way. Thoughts? Thanks.

Are they both Logitech mice? If yes, I'd just buy an inexpensive USB mouse
to hold you over until drivers are available that are fully compatible with
Vista. My Microsoft optical USB works fine in Vista but I also don't use
any special software or features with it, just the basic mouse functions but
those basic functions work.

I had considered that, but I fear the problem is a little more deep rooted
than that. Thanks!

Do you happen to have some other generic mouse lying around? The reason I
ask is, while Logitech builds in a wide feature set, it tends to make mice
and keyboards a bit finicky. I know you stated you tried both PS/2 and USB
but if they were both Logitech, then you are dealing with hardware that
because of that built in wide feature set requires rather specialized
drivers.

I have some generic PS/2 and USB mice lying around from years ago that I can
still plug in and use in a pinch or to test in a situation such as this. If
you have a friend or family menber who might light you borrow a generic
mouse, that would serve the purpose as well and you'd quickly be able to
find out if i'ts just the mouse or if it's something more deeply rooted.

Well, I tried yet another mouse from an HP computer. It dodn't say Logitec on
it but nonetheless Vista found it and identified it as a Logitech mouse and
gave it a new driver. Still no help. What I have noticed is that if I am no a
website and scoll down the page with the arrow keys I can see the links as
they pass under the mouse pointer. So, the mouse is working to the extent
that it sees what is under it. It just doesn't move nor do the buttons seem
to work. I am thinking there is a conflict but I yet to determine what it is.
I have tried both the PS/2 port and various USB ports. Any additional feed
back would be most welcome.

Have you checked Device Manager to see if anything is banged out there, any
red or yellow warning notices? Also, if you've installed software for your
Logitech mouse, you probably should remove that software before testing
another mouse.

Yep, checked device manager and all is well. Also uninstall all
related software. :(
This may sound like a silly question but, trust me, it isn't. Have you
fully shut the system down, I don't mean simply rebooted, I mean shut the
system down and done a cold boot since this issue began? Sometimes you need
to do this in order to get some devices properly recognized as well as fully
clear the crap out of memory.

That sounds significant. What did you try, and what objections did
Vista make?

Update:

After spending 5+ hours on the phone with 3 different levels of Microsoft
tech support I still have no mouse. This is not a driver issue nor is it an
issue with a specific mouse manufacturer. I went out and bought a Microsoft
mouse to avoid the "call Logitech" "call Microsoft" situation. Mouse is
recognized and "appears" to be operating in device manager. Links that appear
under the cursor I can see. Intellipont software also gives me magnify
function. Just can't click or move pointer. PS/2 and USB ports all function
properly. This is definitely a Vista problem. Stay tuned.

Update: Multiple hours and layers of MS tech support and still no resolution.
Mouse rulled out as problem and latest driver installed. Only positive is
that mouse works when booting directly from the Vista DVD and i am becomming
adept at using keypad for mouse functions. If anyone else had this problem
and resolved it short of a clean install please let me know.

Thanks!

I read through all the posts here & sounds like my problem-except I have been
useing my mouse for three months(mouse a USB ball mouse) I was useing it when
it stoped responding & like yours-it see everything under it but will not
move- new mouse was same=-did you find out problem???????????

After over a month with Microsoft tech support and "fixes" that only created
additional problems my patience ran out and I did a clean install with the
upgrade disk on a new drive. Even doing a clean install and then an upgrade
over it with the key didn't finish completely, though the mouse worked. For
some reason Vista only wants a clean install on my machine, no upgrade, not
even over a clean install over Vista. I should have bit the bullet and done
this from the start as the machine is 5 years old and has never had a fresh
reinstall of the O/S. Now my machine runs happily.

Note to Microsoft: Go back to allowing a simple fresh install of Vista with
an upgrade disk as long as the person has a CD from a prior version of
Windows. This tricking the system by installing the upgrade over itself is
more complicated than it should be and is not documented in the material that
comes with the disk.

I have had all the same issues at patruns. and have tried all the same
suggestions. one additional issue is that although drivers for ps2 and usb
connections show devices are working properly, no mouse, corded rollerball on
up to logitech vx revolution will work. the vx revolution has a button on
top that will call up a web browser page and strangely, when this button is
pressed, it is the only thing that works on the mouse. so I know that
"something" is connected. is there some piece of software that needs to be
uninstalled to that may be blocking something? one add'l piece of info: in
device manager uner Human Interface Device Access Properties (local computer)
the path to executable ends with "LocalSystemNetworkRestricted". during one
of a couple microsoft support calls, when the rep had me go into some
diagnostic session (not exactly where) the mouse did work. but that was the
only time... this is killing productivity... any help would be greatly
appreciated!
