FrontPage03 freezes

I used 'Copy a Web site folder to CD' which seemed to work as intended (I
have a disc with a readable site on).
On reopening Frontpage, I now have two site folders with the same name (one
on C: other on D:). I cannot rename either of them. I can still edit but
cannot 'Save As' or create a new page. FrontPage freezes and I have to use
the Task Manager to close it.

Help, please.

Tom,

The problem does not seem to be in Explorer or the Windows shell (we use
Windows XP) but within FrontPage itself. The copy process has created a
website folder reference in Frontpage.

I assume that having two website folders with the same name confuses the
save facilities, the fact each has its own directory path seems irrelevant to
FrontPage. I can still edit pages in the c: version, and publish to the web.

FrontPage will not permit me to delete the D: version (the copied folder).
It comes back with server error 'The server extensions were unable to access
the file D:\myNDL\_vti_pvt\service.lck'. Is there some other way I can delete
the site? It only exists on a CD anyway.

I could delete the C: version and reimport the site from the web, saving it
under a new name but I'm loath to do so as it is my working site.

Have you any other suggestions?

You might want to look at this if you have an HP

There is now a KB article on that: Problems in Windows Explorer or the
Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

Also.......

Turned out it was a problem with a Windows security update. Conflict with HP
software. Also stopped Save As in Excel and Open File in Word

Alan Edwards an MVP on the windowsXP group came up with the fix which worked
a treat

http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip

Unzip it, extract the .reg file to a folder, right-click it and select
Merge and confirm when asked.

Ouch.... (This is not a good thing)

It has worked for so many others.

But my post also had a link to a zip file that will make the changes for
you.

Unzip it, extract the .reg file to a folder, right-click it and select

I agree. Perhaps the zip link will work.
However, I have seen many instances popping up where nothing is working for
folks when they try the registry change. And, they don't have any HP items
installed on their computers.

Tom & John,

Thank you for your generous assistance. The computer is not an HP, it's a
DELL, but we do have HP photo handling software installed. Nevertheless I
hesitated to use your suggestions.

I worked with computers before they invented the microprocessor and I talk
binary, octal and hex!. I know how 15ing, sorry extremely, easy it is to
introduce problems by muddling about in obscure areas.

I did, however run FP Cleaner and, this morning, the problem seems to have
gone. I can edit pages and 'SaveAs', create and save new pages and the Open
pane seems to work as expected.

Perhaps a mod is required to stop the Copy web folder to CD instructions
causing this problem in future.

Again, thanks for your thoughts. I'll come again if I get any other
difficulties!

Is D: a CD-ROM drive? If so, that is why it does not work CDs are
read only - FP needs to write to the CD, even when you are only
looking at the folder structure.
You cannot edit any file that is on a CD, with any program.
To delete the site on the CD - just scratch the CD with sandpaper and
discard it.

If D: is your CD drive you cannot open a FP web from a CD (which is always is read only)
If it is a hard disc w/ a copy of your web from the CD
- you need to remove all the read only attributers from all files and folders copied from the CD

A customer is having the same problem on a Dell and I am going tomorrow to try that fix.
I will post back and let you know if it solves the problem.

Ronx,

Yes, it is a CD ROM. FP seemed to be able to open the site but I didn't try
to edit or save anything. I didn't want to compound any errors I already had!

The problem seemed to be from the fact that FP was aware of two sites with
the same name and got confused when asked to save. FP Cleaner seems to have
cured the problem.

I'll keep the site on CD so people on 'un-netted' laptops can see the site
and when it's too out of date I'll string it up and use it as a bird scarer.

Thanks for your thoughts on this subject.
Yours

Stefan,

I produced a copy of my site on CD to take to a meeting so 'unconnected'
members could see what we were on about.

I asked the FP help how to do it and followed the instructions precicely.
Nevertheless I ended up with FP thinking it had two sites of the same name
and getting its knickers in a twist when I asked it to save.

FP Cleaner seemed to solve the problem.

Thank you for your help,
Yours
