FrontPage without Server Extensions

Hi,

I've got an application that executes FrontPage. It does this by passing
the URL as an argument for the FP executable. For example:

frontpg.exe http://myserver/mydir/myfile.htm

This loads FP with my page already loaded in the browser. The problem
arrises after a change is made and the user wishes to save the change back to
the server. On one of my websites, the users simply click "Save" and the
changes are saved back using http. However, on another website on the same
server they are prompted to save the file locally instead. Neither site has
FP Server Extensions installed. I cannot find (although there must be) a
setting difference...

Anyone have a clue?

If you can open a site in FrontPage using frontpg.exe http://myserver/mydir/myfile.htm
and then edit and save it back to the server, the server **Must** have extensions because
otherwise it won't work.

Change the following link so it matches your domain and click it.
http://www.myserver.com/_vti_inf.html
note: the file name is: _vti_inf.html

If a page opens like this one.

http://95isalive.com/_vti_inf.html

You have an extended server.

Steve,

Thanks for playing, but nope; no Server Extensions install. The link you
describe gives a "page cannot be displayed". I also checked the webroot
directly just to be sure that the _vti* folders and files don't still exist.
They don't.

I'm sure puzzled then, because to the best of my knowledge you can't edit on a live server
in FrontPage without having extensions installed.

At least that's what I've always been told.

?:-)

What kind of Server / OS, as it could have WebDEV (I think I have this right) installed, instead of
the FP Extensions which would allow editing.

If the user is not being prompted to login, then this is a big hole in security which means anybody
could change the web site content.

Yes, we're using WebDAV instead of FPSE. (Probably should have mentioned that).

As for security, its implementing Active Directory. Since the users are in
a domain environment their credentials are passed by Windows.

Back to my original issue. If I open an HTML page using FP directly
(FRONTPG URL) I should be able to save the changes back directly and in fact
can on most servers. However on a few, I'm prompted to save the file locally.

Check your WebDAV security settings or User Access on the server, as well as on the client machine
as either would control having the ability to write back to the server. This would not FP client
application issue.

Thank you... that makes some sense (although its only a FP issue, Word,
Excel, etc work fine)

See if the following link helps:

Thanks Thomas, I never would have thought of that.
