frontpage photo gallery won't let me set photos per line. Help!!

I have 49 photos in my photo gallery, but they are all showing at one time.
I am using the slideshow layout. It won't let me set 5 photos per line. It
just shows all of them at once. Any suggestions?

Did you select the correct layout when you first created the photo gallery?

Also ... 49 thumbnail photos will probably age take toooooooo long to load.
