Frontpage Gradient Fill Effect on Background colour

Ok Guys
I have ready nearly every message here and see that something is mentioned
as doing as a graphic file - will someone please explain what this is and how
to do it considering they are talking to someone is not a computer fundi and
on first time web site design attempt
