Frontpage FTP publishing

When publishing a site via File>Publish Web, after
entering the ftp://216.189.373.099 numbers I need to
direct it to send the files to a more specific location at
the host. Somehow I have to direct it to some file
extensions like /var/www/html. Does anyone know where I
make this happen. If I just use the numbers alone, the
site gets uploaded to the wrong folders at the host. The
hosting service is telling me to use my FTP client and
find an option like "Starting directory" or "Initial
remote folder" etc. I dont see anything like this.

In this case you can not use FP's FTP function. You have to publish your web
to a folder on your HD, then open this folder in Windows Explorer and delete
all _vti folders, then using 3rd Party FTP application upload the content to
your host.

Not sure what OS the server is running,
but try publishing to:
ftp://216.189.373.099/public_html

note that the above is public_html

It should prompt you for your Username and
password, which will "direct" FrontPage to your
"account"

I see. That's a bummer. Since it is on my computer
already isn't it on my hard drive? Or is publishing to
the hard drive different. Also, do you know any common or
popular third party FTP apps?

The reason for publish it to another folder, is so that you can delete the
_vti folder which do not need to be uploaded, however you need to keep them
locally so that FP can manage your web.

Can you help us with the reason you prefer FTP instead of FP Extensions?
Maybe we should all change to FTP.

Try entering this form in the Publish Destination dialog
box (if, indeed, /var/www/html is the correct folder).

ftp://216.189.373.099/var/www/html

The usual reason is that the FrontPage Server Extensions
aren't available.

Publishing through the server extensions is faster and
generally more feliable than FTP. When designers get in
trouble with the extensions, it's usually because they
circumvented them (i.e. via FTP) or becaue they let their
Web sites get too large without creating subwebs.
