FrontPage Extensions error

Tonight for some unknown reason we got the following message when attempting
to publish a simple change.

"The Server sent a response which FrontPage could not parse. If you are
trying to connecdt to a FrontPage Server, check with the Server's
Administrater to make sure the FrontPage Extensions are installed properly".

That was the error message. So we immediately contact our service provider
that operate the Virtual Private Servers (a unix machine) to determine what
if anything happened to the FrontPage Extensions.

Their solution was to have me Telnet into the domain on the server and do a
"vuninstall frontpage" and then do a "vinstall frontpage". This is all fine
and good, but we still at a loss as to what really happened to the FrontPage
Extension. There were working fine. What happens to the extensions that
requires removal and then the reinstall?

Does this extension failure occur frequently or was this just a fluke? The
service provided said that Microsoft doesn't provide any event logs for the
installed extensions so you can't really tell what happened. Is this
correct? And is Microsoft improving this in the next release?

thanks, Cecil:)

Normally no the FP SE should not require reinstallation,
- but the host could have done a variety of things, (security updates, etc)

The FP2002 SE are the latest (and will be the last) version of the FP SE

Let me sure I understand the implication that FrontPage Extensions will not
be updated and enhanced in future releases of FrontPage:
Does this mean that MS got us to invest time and energy in FP and the FP
Extension and is abandoning this technology and now us since we invested in
learning it?

Are FrontPage and their extensions something that we too should abandon? I
hate to think of having to learn still another technique for creating web
pages, let alone needing to re-create all of our thousands of web pages
depending on FrontPage and the extensions.

Thanks, Cecil:)

The functions provided by the extensions are being replaced/improved by the
use of SharePoint services.

Do SharePoint Services work on unix servers or does SharePoint function only
in the Windows environment. Our service provided primarly operates unix
machines. Is SharePoint functionality something that the average service
provider would handle as they do today with FrontPage Extensions?
Thanks, Cecil:)
