Frontpage attachments

When users view(download/save) any attachment to my website the frontpage
login dialogue box appears and asks for the loggin details. This means they
are unable to download any attachments. This has happened suddenly and to all
attachments. Can anybody help?
 
Where are the attachment files
Post a URL to a page w/ and attachment link
- don't put them in the _private folder or a subweb w/ unique permissions
