I wanted to say hello to all and thank Microsoft for this wonderful resource.
I am about to start building my first website and wanted input from the
experienced users on this board. Should I buy frontpage2003 or wait a
couple of weeks for Expression? I was hoping someone could guide me through
this.

I have a feeling I will be posting many additional questions in the future.

I guess I should explain what I am trying to do. I would like to create a
webpage to do the following:

1. Allow visitors to fill in a form page various information (that will
link to a access database).

2. Allow users to view a list of rules and somehow click a button to agree
to the rules (this should link to their database to show acceptance of the
rules).

3. Allow users to upload information including data and pictures through a
separate webpage that will be added to the database and the picture will post
to a predetermined size on a new frame on a new webpage automatically.

4. Allow users to access a message board function - to post, reply and
discuss topics. The message board should allow users to create username and
passwords, and also use my domain name www.domainname.com/messageboard

5. Allow the data uploaded into the form to plug into an excel spreadsheet
where I have already created formula's to apply to the data.

Can this be done with either application? Frontpage 2003 v. Expression?

I will need help with my project I am sure from you all.....
thanks again,
Conrad

These can be done with either although a few of them will require that you
learn some type of server-side scripting to connect to the database, such as
ASP.

David thanks for the response. I have no idea how to use ASP. Are the
things that I would like done hard to do? Forgive my ignorance but I have a
feeling I am going to get lost in the shuffle.

To add to David's post I will also say that the hopes that you have for your
site are achievable but will take some patience with learning either
application (FrontPage or Expression) and will not be accomplished
overnight. FrontPage/Expression are very powerful applications but they
also require an understanding of some technical things that will only come
with a few months (or longer) of experience in web development. I'm not
trying to discourage you with your project but to prepare you for what's
ahead. Be patient, good luck and don't give up.

Jeff

Sure. Stores will still have it for a while or you'll be able to get it
online (newegg.com, tigerdirect.com etc)

If you're not a programmer then you should hire someone. You'll never learn
all that by Jan

Taking into consideration your deadline of January 10, 2007 I suggest
looking for someone to do the whole project or if you do want to learn
FrontPage/Expression find someone that has experience with either of those
and have them work with the form/data base design part while you put
together the "look/theme" (meaning colors, menu style, background colors,
page layout) of your site. For you to do just that part in 30 days is a
tall order since you have not used either application before! And finding
someone to do the design for you could be a challenge in that short of time
if they have other projects that they are working on. There are developers
that will take on a short deadline job but the price will be higher than the
usual fee charged for doing the work.

As for suggestions for a designer, that will depend on how comfortable your
are about hiring someone that you may find online as opposed to a local
person that you can work with face-to-face. Or you may even find someone
online that is in your area to do your project!

Good Luck with your project
Jeff

You should absolutely and without a doubt hire someone if you need it
functional by that date.

Craig

That's a tall order, even for an experienced developer, in 30 days at this time of the year
- requires a hosted account (Windows) that supports Access DB, server side script and browser file upload to file and DB

| Thanks Jeff,
|
| Well then let me ask the question. Should I just forego this endevor and
| seek out someone to pay to create this site? I will be honest. I need to
| have it created by January 10, 2007. I have a feeling that one month with
| frontpage or expression will not cut it for me. Thoughts? Suggestions for
| web programers - if you think I cant do it?

I installed the trial and opened a backup copy of our web that was made in FP
with one of the themes. Unless I missed something is there no longer a way to
modify the navigation buttons or existing theme that was made in FP?

When you insert an interactive button (with Expression) it appears that its
attributes are not compliant right out of the box, gives warnings about using
“fp-style†does that mean the Expression web wont validate if you use its
buttons?

Also is there a way to get into a "navigation view" like there is in FP?

When you insert a NEW interactive button with EW, you get a fully
compliant button. It comes in 2 parts - <img src="blah"
mouse-events-list alt="something" /><!-- style description -->
Note the styling is in a separate comment.

When editing an existing button placed in the page by FrontPage, you get
the button and its style in one non-compliant tag <img src="blah"
mouse-events-list fp-style="description of button">

See http://www.rxs-enterprises.org/fp/b/buttons/workarounds_ew.htm and
compare the code for the test button with that for the orangey buttons.

There is No navigation view in EW. With the removal of the
non-compliant FP navigation there is no need for a navigation view.

Themes have also been removed. EW will retain any existing theme, but
does not have the means to customise it, or change it.
