Hi, I'm new to web site design and I want to know if it's still a good idea
to use Frontpage 2003 to develop a website which basic purpose is to show
items and sell them asking some information from the customer and using
paypal as the main method of payment.
I tried to use the Expression Web version that comes with the Action Pack
subscription but after installing it, my computer started to behave strangely
and send error msgs in such a way that I decided to uninstall that program.
Uninstalling that program was not enough, I had to restore my computer to a
point in time before the installation of Expression Web.

If I still can use this program (Frontpage) please let me know the fastest
way to learn it (Urls, books, documents, etc).

Thank you

Why learn a program with all its quirks and problems? Try HTML and
CSS instead. These are the basic web languages and in my opinion are
easier to use directly that FrontPage. (To use FrontPage effectively
you still need to know some HTML and CSS.)

Hi Salvador,

I think asking such a question in a FrontPage newsgroup will result in
responses biased toward FP :) You should also post your question to the
forum for Expression Web at:

http://social.expression.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/web/threads

and/or at the newsgroup:

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...lic.expression.webdesigner&cat=&lang=en&cr=US

FrontPage Server Extensions are no longer supported and more and more web
hosts are dropping support for them. Even if you don't use any of the
'webbots' or other features that rely on FPSE, the code that FP generates is
not good according to today's web standards, which may result in less
consistency in how your page displays in different web browsers and platforms.

Can you be more specific about how your computer was behaving and the errors
you were getting. Better yet, try installing it again, and then use Windows
Update to update your system, and then if you still experience those
problems, please post to the forum I linked to above and you'll get prompt
help from some of our most active forum members which include a lot of MVPs.

I'll try to reinstall the "Expresion Web" that came with my Action Pack
Subscription, to see if it sends error or not. I'll let you know. Do you know
if it works fine?
Where can I find information to learn to use it quickly?

Thanks

Expression Web seems to be working fine now. Maybe it did not work before
because I had Sharepoint 2007 installed as well. I removed Sharepoint and
Frontpage 2003.

Besides the forums what are the documents or references to learn to use this
tool ASAP?

Thank you

Frontpage MVP, Kathleen Anderson, emailed me privately to correct my response
and she's absolutely correct. I was lazy and didn't feel like looking up the
support details for FPSE. I should've said "...eventually won't be
supported...". Here's Kathleen's message:

Hi Anna:
The FrontPage Server Extensions on Windows 2003 servers will be supported by
Microsoft for the life of Windows 2003 - full support is for 2 years after
Server 2008 is retailed, and 3 further years of extended support.

And FP2002 extensions for Server 2008 are available - see
http://blogs.iis.net/bills/archive/...er-extensions-fpse-for-iis7-rc0-released.aspx

~ Kathleen

Thanks Kathleen, you rock, as always!

Glad you got it working ...

More resources can be found here ... lots of links..

You are best starting with this however, as it helps you set up ew in the
best way possible to help newbies, then ew will help you reconise errors. If
your used to using fp i would suggest turning off the formatting/common
toolbar so you won't use it and so generate a lot of embedded styles, and
when you do rename the style as to what the style does the default is style
1, style 2 etc. (ew makes styles instead of inserting fonts for instance
within the html) Also work in split view it helps you undesrstand what is
going on in the code view even if you don't realise your doing it.

I also recommend Cheryl's book
Foundations of Expression Web and you can find more updates for 2.0 on her
site

All that will get you started, keep referring to the help in few too.
For specific things just ask on the forums and newsgroups .. if you want a
more moderated arena I have a ew list.
