Dana - Provo

Dear anyone:

I have never used a newsgroup before, so I do not know what I am in for.
Please bear with me. I don't know where else to find my answer!

I just upgraded to FrontPage 2003. I created eight pages, each having a
"contents" style frames page. I did not create a dynamic web template, but
when I add content to any page, it appears on EVERY page. I just don't get
it!

I don't even know if creating a dwt is an option. It seems that FrontPage
2003 automatically does it.

Earlier, I tried the same work, creating a dynamic web page template. I
created my editable areas. I could not detach anything from any dwt. The
menu choices were dimmed. That's why I started over and did not even
address the dwt in my second attempts.

I have read everything I could find on the Microsoft help sites and
somewhere, I read that if there are 2002 server extensions, there are
problems. However, I never left my own computer, so no server is involved,
I think.

Is there a primer that will help me troubleshoot this issue?

Are there some settings I am missing?

I have spent a solid week on determining the resolution and there is nothing
out there that seems to work!

In summary, I have attempted to create eight pages, but each page is exactly
the same. I cannot figure out how to add unique content to each page.

Thanks in advance for your help. I do not know how I am supposed to obtain
an answer, so if it does not automatically come back to me, can someone
please let me know what I am to expect?

(Nightmares of 5 billion email messages....)

Thanks.

Dana

Dear Steve:

Thank you. I think have already read all of the help and training articles
and gone through all the courses. (I really did try to fix this on my own!)

What I think is happening, because I saw it in three other questions today
alone, is that somehow, Shared Borders is on and all my content is going
into the shared area.

What I do not know how to do is as follows:

How do I turn shared borders off. Or how do I designate an area that is not
shared? Did I create my pages incorrectly, including shared areas
inadvertently? The selection under Format, Shared Borders only indicates "All
Pages" or "Current Page". I have not found any help which defines what that
means? One of the boxes has to be checked. What if I don't want a shared
border at all? Where do I go and what boxes should be checked.

I tried checking all the boxes at one time or another, but I still get the
same content on each page.

Maybe I missed the article I needed to read....?

CLEARLY, I am missing the obvious.....But so are a lot of other folks. I
have seen my question a lot and I have not understood the answers.

I appreciate the help, but pretent I know absolutely nothing, because I
apparently do not!

Thanks for your patience and indulgence.

Dana

When you use a shared border, you have to create a container in the page
that's going to use it.
A simple example would be a page with a two column table, with the shared
border in the left column and the page content in the right

I personally don't use them.
I prefer include pages.

To turn off shared borders:
First, make a copy of the content you want to keep.

Open a page
Format->Shared Borders
To turn off on the open page only select Current Page, To turn off all
pages, select All pages
Clear all the tick boxes on the right.
For all pages, tick the box at the bottom "Make this the default
setting" (wording may vary slightly).

Removing shared borders will delete the shared border files, and
everything in them.

Note, the shared regions are from the edge of the web page to a dotted
line (in design or normal view), leaving a non-shared region in the
centre of the page. The shared regions are at the top, bottom left
and right edges of the page.

Shared borders are indicated in design view by a dotted line - so anything
*above*, *left*, *right* or *below* the dotted line(s) depending on what
borders you have turned on, this content is "in" the border and will appear
on all pages where the borders are being used.

So you need to put the content you don't want on every page *outside* the
borders ie. below the top, right of the left border, left of the right
border and above the bottom border (the border being the dotted line(s) ---
if that makes sense)

Dear Andrew and Ron:

I really do appreciate your answers. They are exactly what I needed. You
are REALLY great for helping!

My next question, if you are still following this line of thought, is that I
successfully created my page, www.GraceBayTownhomes.com. But for some
reason, my navigation link bar photos are not rendering properly. The
actual links do work.

Microsoft's "Help" does admit that when a link bar is placed in a shared
border, it may not work or it may not render properly. The fix was to
create the link bar in Navigation View. I then opened Navigation View and
deleted the link and tried recreating it in the Navigation View. I even
turned FrontPage on and off to make sure nothing was left hanging around. I
was unsuccessful at getting my photos to show up.

I also went to my hosting site's filemanager to see if the actual .gif files
were in the correct folder (with the help of their technical guy) and they
were. They are just not showing up!

Now, what do I do?

OK, I think I have figured it out!

The FIX was to add the PAGE while in Navigation View. What I did is deleted
the link and then added the link back.

To fix the problem, one has to add as many new pages as you want on the
link, copy the contents from the old pages to the new pages and then rename
everything. (You can then delete the old pages somewhere in the process.)

In detail:

To really add a new page in Navigation View, one has to add a new page
(HA!). This will show up as "new_page_1".

Then, one has to open the OLD PAGE, e.g., Contact Us, and save it as
"new_page_1". When asked if you want to overwrite this page, say yes. You
will basically have two pages that have the same content (Contact Us and
new_page_1).

You then have to get rid of the old page and rename new_page_1 with the name
you wanted, e.g., Contact Us.

Then, delete the link to Contact Us.

Then, change the navigation text from "new_page_1" to Contact Us.

It is a bit of a chore, but not really bad if you only have a few pages.
God Bless those who have dozens of pages!

Hope this helps others. Hope I am correct! It worked for me!

I was almost correct. You cannot save the old page as the new page. You
have to physically copy the contents of the old page to the new page.
Basically, you have to redo the entire page.

Then, I think it will work.

If anyone has an easier solution, please let me know!

Dana - Provo

OK, I give up. It worked for some of my buttons, but not for all of them!
What is the solution?

Dana - Provo

First, remove all spaces from folder and file names. Spaces in names
can break links in some browsers and servers. There is an addin at
http://www.jimcosoftware.com that will do this for you.

With the web open, use Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks
This should regenerate all the images.

The correct way to add a page to navigation (and produce the buttons
for it), is to open Navigation view, then drag the page from the
file/folder list into the navigation view and drop it under the page
you want it to be under. This should be a very simple operation. If
all the buttons are not produced, run the recalculate hyperlinks
routine described above.

Thanks Ron!! I know this will work. I have tried everything else!

You are my hero!

Dear CJSM:

NO, it did not work for me either. I have re-aksed the question on 3-2-06,
but have not gotten a response.

It seems there is a glitch that everyone wants to ignore. I have seen the
question asked several times, but I have not seen a solution. Watch the
3-2-06 posting to see if someone responds.

I do believe that spaces have something to do with it, because I seem to
remember a few years ago I had the same issue. My host, Network Solutions,
was able to remove the folder space and resolve the problem, but they cannot
do it now.
