Frontpage 2000. Security button greyed out.

I was trying to fix my old web site, and when I tried to save it by
publishing to another folder on my computer I kept getting the message to
enter user name and password - and all my efforts were rejected. I tried
changing the Security parameters but nothing worked.

Finally I made the mistake of publishing to the web, and now my web on the
internet gives error 404 and won't let me access it.

I tried reinstalling Fpage but no joy. I received a message regarding Server
Extensions (which I don't understand). This has not happened in the past. I
don't have too many options since the Security dropdown menu is greyed out
and unavailable.

I would be most grateful for some guidance on this. Thank you in advance.

What was the error message - so far all you have said is equivalent to "My
car does not work - what is wrong?".

You normally don't need a password when publishing from one folder on the PC
to another - were you in fact publishing from the server to PC?

A link to the website (on the server) might be useful.

Sorry for being vague.

I think the message was something like - your server extensions don't allow
you to publish to this website. It all started when I tried to publish my
updated website to another drive, and it said it needed a user name and
password to publish to www.chromian.com/port80. Well I didn't know what that
was, and hit cancel. The files were copied however to the target drive. But
when I went to my website www.chromian.com I got a 404 error.
I cleared all the temp files (per internet advice from somewhere). I can now
get to my website, but it doesn't work in all respects.
However, my "security" button on the drop down menu is now greyed out
permanently. Even if I open an old (different) web off my hard drive.

Have I screwed up the server extensions (whatever they are)? Do I need to
fix something in Windows XP?

I am afraid that I am out of my depth here. All I want to do is publish my
web properly as I always have done.

I really appreciate your assistance. Thanks.

Are you running Apache on your PC? If so, you cannot publish to any drive
on your PC using FrontPage unless you publish to a file location or use
FTP - requires an FTP server.

www.chromian.com is running on an Apache server and requires a username and
password.
The security menu item will only work in a server based website running the
FrontPage extensions, where the host allows it. Security is not enabled on
sites that are not running the extensions, or are disc based (file system
sites).

Your references to your hard drives and http://www.chromian.com are
confusing - they imply you are hosting your site on your PC using Apache as
the server - Apache on Windows will not support the extensions, and
Publishing will fail (unless you use FTP), and the security button will be
unavailable.

No, I do not have an Apache on my PC.
For the last ten years I have got along just fine. I don't know what is
going on. Something is surely broken if the security button is greyed out?
Thanks. Ian

Ron explained the grayed security button.
Contact your host.

Then you are not publishing to your hard drive.
Try opening your website (http://www.chromian.com) on the server in
FrontPage, then using File->Publish Web (or File->Publish Site) and browsing
to a folder on your PC.
If you cannot open the site then ask your host to fix the permissions and
reinstall the extensions.
You WILL need a userid and password to open the site on the server. You
should NOT need a userid and password to open a folder on your own PC.

Sorry guys, I don't think that is the answer. I'll call the ISP when I feel
comfortable.

Why is it that I can open Frontpage, open ANY old web on my computer
different from chromian.com, and the security button is greyed out? I bet I
could disconnect from the web entirely and the button would be greyed out.

I'll check the functionality on another computer or two and see if I get the
same behaviour.

I will get back to you. However I do appreciate your input so far. I'll nail
this thing eventually.

The security button will be unavailable on all websites unless the sites are
Server based (that is - open using http:// ) AND the host allows the button
to be used.
It will NOT work on a disk based web.
" I bet I could disconnect from the web entirely and the button would be
greyed out"
You win your bet - that is what I said in different words.
