If my USB modem is running my 2 front USB ports quite often will not work,
anyone know why? They work OK when modem's not running but still connected.
I have 4 at the back which are used, the modem, printer, external HDD (these
3 all have their own PSU's) and USB keyboard.

Is seems that when the modem is active, it is taking more power over the USB
bus. Therefore, the USB "may" shutdown the front ports in order to have more
power over the USB bus. You can check this by trying to connect the USB modem
onto a self-powered USB hub. Powered USB hubs provide additional power over
the USB bus.
