Front USB ports - unrecognised device

Hi,

I have been trying to troubleshoot an acquaintance's HP Pavilion PC
running XP Home Edition (not SP1). The system has 4 USB ports, two on
the back and two on the front of the system unit. According to her,
the front USB ports suddenly stopped working. The back ports still
work correctly.

Looking at Device Manager, there's one entry for an Intel 820801AA
Universal Host Controller, one for a Root Hub and one saying
'unrecognised device'. I've deleted the devices and rebooted to get XP
to reinstall the drivers and I get the same result. There doesn't seem
to be any relevant options in the BIOS either.

I know power is getting to the front ports as I plugged a ball-less
mouse into the ports and the mouse light illuminates.

Any thoughts as to what may be wrong?

Many thanks,

Paul

Try deleting ALL the USB ports and devices using device
manager and re-boot.

If that doesn't restore the USB operation, you might need to
open the case and check for a loose data wire on the mobo
header, USB uses wires for power +/- and separate wires for
data +/-

If that doesn't fix the problem, SP1 does have USB support
fixes, it would be worthwhile to download that for many
reasons.
