A web desiner got tired of doing a web for a non-profite organization. He
used Dreamwever to build the site. He also used flash. I am the only one in
the organization who knows anything about websites. So, guess who got the
job of updating this website. I don't know anything about flash or
Dreamwever but I use Front Page. We can't afford to buy Dreamwever. I
downloaded the site (FTP) to Front page. I made a few changes on some pages
and sent them back using my FTP application. Well, all I got was garbage on
those pages I changed. They worked very well in Front Page or in the MS
browser. Someone told me that Front Page and Dreamwever are not compatible.
You can't put Dreamwever web pages in Front Page and send them back to the
web host. Is that true? Is there a way I can get around this problem? Is
ther a Dreamwever newsgroup I can go to and ask the same question if I can't
get help here? I know what they will say. Front Page stinks. I like Front
Page.

Can you provide a URL to the pages with problem and I sure someone here can
help you solve the problems.

Personally, I would basically redo all of the pages, if the site is going to
be managed via FP from now on.

I was thinking of redoing the intire site but I would rather make changes on
this site if I can do it.

FrontPage is a web development tool. Dreamweaver is a web development tool.
The designer is the person who creates the site, which tool they use is more
or less irrelevant to how "good" the website ends up being. There are really
good sites made with both of those tools and really "bad" sites made with
both of them. It is the person who creates the site that makes more
difference than the tool used.

FWIW I routinely use FrontPage and Dreamweaver in the same site. If you
aren't using any FP bots there is absolutely no problem going back and forth
between the two though you may need to recalculate hyperlinks when you first
open it after making change in Dreamweaver.

If the site is going to be managed exclusively in FrontPage from now on you
won't even need to do that. The only problems I can see depends on how the
site uses Flash. If the Flash is used for navigation and you do not have the
original FLA files and the appropriate version of Flash to edit them you
will need to replace the navigation. Otherwise it should be pretty straight
forward.

I'm glade to read what you said. I can't see why it would make any
difference. Still, I have trouble tranfering the updated web pages into the
host site. I'll have to try again. Maybe the pages weren't tranfered right.
Each htm page also has a swf page. I wounder if I have to make changes to
the swf file when I make changes to the htm file.

You may have to FTP to and from the website since it wasn't originally used
with FP extensions to publish. Alternatively you can see if the host will
reset the FP extensions (assuming they are available).

As far as editing the SWF files, you can't those are the compiled Flash
pages. You need the original SWF files or you will need to get a Flash
Decompiler. (There are several available if you search with Google.) Then
use Flash to edit. You can't edit Flash files with FrontPage. I'm not even
sure if you can edit the files resulting from the decomiplers easily.

Unless you need to change information in the swf files you won't need to
edit them. If they are used for navigation or links then you will need to
edit or replace the Flash files.

Thank you. I've always found newsgroups very valuable in my computer
experance. Still, I know alot of people who never use newsgroups. What a
valuable source of information they are missing.
