After reinstalling Vista Home Premium my front earphone socket (green one)
stopped working

Speakers work

Twiddled around with sound settings and eventually started working

Last night - stopped working again

I know it's Vista issue (not hardware) because there's lots reports about it

Anyone heard about this and know cure - if not would anyone know which
driver is responsible and i'll try get an updated driver

We wouldn't know what driver you need - that's determined by your
hardware manufacturer, and you don't tell us anything about that.

Check the Device Manager.

I dont need to know which 'brand' of driver - it'll find that
automatically - i just want to know which device

I looked at device manager - hence wasn't sure which 'device' would be
responsible for front headphone socket so I can update the driver

Windows will only install the device automatically if it came bundled
on the install disk. If it's a specialized hardware driver, you can
only update it by going to the manufacturer. You will need to know the
brand to do that.

Headphone sockets don't have drivers. It will be connected to an I/O
chip on the main board. That chip will have drivers associated with it.
That driver will be available from the computer vendor or main board
manufacturer.

Its also entirely possible that the socket itself is going bad...

Not in this case - the socket is fine - it's Vista issue - quite widely
reported - hence doesn't matter which manufacturer
