I am far from being an expert and that is why I want to play safe. I have
windows 98 in my desktop and want to migrate to windows xp professional. How
difficult or how easy is it? Am I too naive in believing that all I need to
do is put the CD and follow straight forward instructions? thank you

Before you do anything make sure you machine is able to run XP. Make sure
your equipment all have XP drivers prior to buying XP. Since you failed to
offer any information on anything it is impossible to offer further help.

I keep reading on the newsgroups that in the majority of cases, xp home is
quite adequate--and less expensive. Professional adds features relevant to
networking. Not knowing your actual needs, all I can suggest is to
investigate features of both. I went from'95 to xp, BTW, got home edition
and find it suits my needs just fine. Can and did add Office-xp
Professional to the system w/o problems.

A little more. You should first uninstall any Anti Virus; any utility
things like Norton, and any CD burning software, to reinstall XP
compatible versions after. And check up on support for hardware -
scanners on parallel ports especially may have no drivers for XP. Read
Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at

If you have hardware capable of running XP, it's very easy, and
you can do exactly as you suggest.

However I suggest two things:

1. First go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
and run the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor.

2. Before you start the upgrade, do a backup of anything you
can't afford to lose. Nothing should be lost when doing an
upgrade, but it's prudent to have a fallback plan if things don't
go the way they should.
