This is just for nostalgia. I took in a laptop to clean the hard drive
before disposal. It was a Dauphine D1000. It had a 20 meg HD and 4 meg of
RAM. The original purchase price on the books was $7000. I wish I had 7
grand to buy 3 or 4 or 5 laptops!

My second and a "proper" PC (first was a 8MHz 8086 with 2 floppy drives
only) was a 16MHz 286 with 1MB RAM, 256k graphics card and 40MB HDD. Cost me
3000 USD.

No it didn't (unless you were living over there at the time!) - it cost you
£1640 at today's rates.

Don't convert to dollars - post in pounds, let them do the conversion! ;o)

You're right, in more ways than one, and I was actually wrong with the
figures. It cost me £1700 (close to your £1640) but the conversion rate then
was more like $2.50 to £1 so it would have been more like $4250 and not
$3000.
