I use several email accounts Outlook 2002. How do I show the 'From' field
so I can select which account I want to send from?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom,

The "From" field can be seen by opening a new message and choosing View -
From Field. The From: line can be filled in with anything you want.

Please note that the default account used to determine what information the
recipient sees in the "From" line is obtained based on the order of the
accounts in your profile.

Select Tools - Options - Mail Setup Tab - E-Mail Accounts - View or change
existing e-mail accounts - Next

There you will see the listing of email accounts, with the one on top being
the default. That means that every message you send will be processed by
that default mail server, and will be seen by the recipient as from the
account name in the default. If you put a name in the From: line of your
message, it will still be sent from the default mail server.

For example, if your default account name is Tom with an email addresss of
tom@hotmail, and you create a message and put (e-mail address removed) in the
From field, then the recipient --may-- get a message that says

From: (e-mail address removed) [[email protected]] sent of behalf of Tom
[[email protected]]

This is because email headers can support two header lines, namely Sender
and From.

There is no easy way to specify the account you want to be the default
without changing the account order prior to replying to each message.

The only "easy" way I am aware of is to create an Outlook profile for each
email account you have. But that means logging on and off of Outlook for
each account in order to check mail from each account. You could create a
main account that checks email from all accounts as you have now, but tell
Outlook to leave the messages on the server. This way you can see all of
your messages at once. When you need to reply, you will log off and log on
again using one of the pther accounts, check mail again, this time not
leaving it on the server, and then replying to the message.

Overall, it is a real pain either way to tell Outlook that you want to
change the default server on a per-message basis.

Moose

Moose -- actually, you've been a bit misinformed :-) There is indeed an
easy way to select the sending account in Outlook 2002. There should be an
"Accounts" button on the toolbar in a new mail message -- clicking that
button should give the user a list of all available e-mail accounts, and
when one is clicked, the "infobar" will read "This message will be sent via
<accountname>". The "From" field should not be used to choose a sending
account, except when Exchange Server is being used and a delegate is trying
to send a message on behalf of someone else within the organization.

Some of your confusion may be a holdover from Outlook 2000 when installed in
Corporate/Workgroup mode, which did require that the order of the mail
accounts be changed to allow a certain account to be the sending account.
Outlook 2002 did away with separate modes and also the need to change the
order of the accounts.

Oh so true.

For some reason the accounts button was not there on my messages, I never
knew it existed, and I have now made sure it now there. And, since it was
never there in prior versions, I never thought to look for it in 2002. It
is a nice feature and I am glad that MS enabled this.

Thanks for the correction. I will pass along to others that I know to have
this same issue.

Moose
