From Movie file to DVD

I've created a movie that is too big for the dvd. The real question is how
to select the proper settings to match the length of movie versus the 4.7 gb
dvd. Is there a computation? Is there some easy way to accomplish this?

the rule of thumb is that an hour of video fits on a DVD if you're using
entry-level DVD software.

higher level software can compress the files more and get you a couple or
few hours worth.

I guess my confusion comes from the fact that when it's time to save the
movie, there is not a sp ep form. I know that the 4.7 takes 1 hour in top
quality, but where is the next level and how long is it. On VHS we had the
ep and the sp and we knew that at certain levels we could get so many
minutes/movies on the tape. The movie maker program does not tell that kind
of information unless I'm missing it. I checked the next level in the save
movie section, but the information there isn't the answer I'm looking for.

the quality saving options are different with the different DVD software
packages... low end ones don't give you choices.

I've just experienced exactly the same problem. However where my confusion
lies is that I have created a movie that is 1hr 44mins in duration and the
saved file is 1.2GB in size. However as soon as I use my DVD burning software
- Sonic (entry level as stated below) it calculates it as being 2 GB higher
than that the allowable 4.7GB. Can anyone recommend software would allow me
to place the entire amount onto the one DVD.

the saved movie doesn't go on the DVD.... the DVD software needs to convert
the file to standard DVD-compliant MPEG-2 files, and it's the size of those
that count.... and their size depends more on the duration of the movie than
on the size of the input file.

Something like Sonic's MyDVD Premier 8 has a feature which is
'Fit-to-Disc'... other software has something similar. It can put up to a
few hours on a DVD.
