Ok, the story so far...

I was having problems with my Internet Explorer whenever I tried to
save either a picture or a page. The result in both cases was that the
Browser window would "freeze" for several seconds.

NOW... Upon boot-up, my icons at first appear and everything seems to
be normal. Then -- suddenly -- the screen goes black (except for a
little program I have had installed for a long time to monitor my
internet UL/DL speeds).

Pressing CRTL-ALT-DEL brings up the WIndows Task Manager where I can
bring up Explorer, temporarily, by starting a new task and entering
"explorer".

The desktop appears for brief moments before disappearing, once again.

I am typing this message while having opened my newsreader in those
brief moments of the desktop's appearance. But, if I minimize the
newsreader, the screen is totally black except for the the
afore-mentioned net monitor.

(NOTE: The screen is NOT black due to having invoked a screen-saver.
Just because all icons and the Taskbar are hidden. Pressing the
"Windows" button has no effect at this time.

Any ideas?

PS I have run Spybot S&D, Lavasoft's Adaware, and Norton Antivirus --
all of which are up-to-date. Nothing is reported as being amiss. AI
have also run "regclean" with the same result.

PPS. Machine Info:

Pentium IV 2.6gig
80gig HD
Windows XP (SP 1)

Uh, er, gang...

All of this took place on a laptop and...well, I had --quite
inadvertently-- punched the switch to route the display to a
(non-existent) TV or computer monitor.

<Wiping the contents of several self-inflicted egg impacts off of my
face as I crawl away muttering...>

I wish the rest of my computer problem (i.e. the saving from IE 6
"freeze" problem) were as easy to resolve!

Why not uninstall ie and you will get the option to repair ie. That cud do
it....

You may not believe this but...Internet Explorer doesn't show up
anywhere in my Add/Remove Programs. Not under any of the tabs.

I had already tried to uninstall/repair it using that option but it
didn't give me a choice of repairing itself...and it never went
away...just disappeared from the "add/remove" menu.

But I'd be grateful for any help you might be able to give.
