No. However, you may have to upgrade the application after you change
the OS.

would not let me upgrade. I was told I would have to buy
the new version for XP. I bought Norton's instead.

You can look at the stores, McAfee offers upgrades and
rebates several times every year. If you time it right, you
can get a new version for free when you combine cash
register discounts, rebates and upgrade rebates.

I think I've never paid more than $4.95 final cost for
McAfee.

All right. You got several good answers. Here is one more answer.
If you are going to upgrade to XP, go here (link to MS site) and get
the free XP disk that has security updates on it up to Oct 2004. With
the CD comes a separate 3rd party CD which says it is free to use for
a year (printed on the CD) - both anti-virus & a firewall programs.
It is by "EZ Armor Le". I have heard EZ is good. The shipping and
handling is even free. You pay 0.

I think with any anti-virus software nowadays there is no more
lifetime updates offered anymore. You have to pay every year of
updates. But it isn't much I don't think. I don't know who charges
what - I upgraded from a 2003 to a 2004 package, so I am now getting
updates for another year with the upgrade.

Also, AVG has free anti-virus software that they update too. They'd
like you to purchase their pro-type deal, but you don't have to. I do
not know how good the free anti-virus version is. I have been told it
works.

You definitely need both anti-virus & a firewall nowadays with XP.
Your computer, when connected to the Internet, is constantly being
attacked. Every hacker writes for XP. Updates happen all of the
time. I have heard that you can get infected by just going to a
website & viewing it.

Don't even connect for even just 5 seconds with XP without a firewall
engaged. XP has a built-in firewall that is OK, but you should get a
better one eventually. And if use the XP firewall, you need to turn
it on - it is off by default.
