Hi all

I think some of people in alt comp freeware are in danger of killing off the
group that they say they are trying to protect, with the constant arguing
about what is/is not freeware, what is/is not off topic, who can/can not use
the name alt comp freeware etc...

Also reading some of the post in alt comp freeware the remarks at the end of
their e-mail's, are so childish and immature it's hard to believe the
posters are adults.

Maybe a simple solution to these problems, is for everybody to write their
own F.A.Q. (frequently asked questions), and include who they have
kill-filed, who they think is a troll/netkop etc... and post it to their own
web page (or ask a friend to host it if they do not have access to a web
page), and just have a link at the bottom of their e-mail then if anyone
really wants to know that persons opinions, they just click on the link.

And in keeping to the spirit of alt comp freeware here are three links to
sites I have found useful

No. What is going to kill off the group is people like you who insist
on starting new threads every 5 goddamn minutes and resurrecting the
effen' topic.

I filter out a good many of the so called regulars for that very reason. I
looked at how many of their posts were actually constructive suggestions to
requests for freeware and came to realize that most of their posts were
simply about them bickering amongst themselves. They were deadweight who
didn't contribute anything useful to this group.

I suspect that most people who come here are like me. We mostly lurk,
extract what's useful, occasionally leave a useful comment or suggestion,
then leave. . . we don't get involved with the "regulars" 'cuz we frankly
don't have the time. These days I find most of my freeware by Googling for
it, with only the occasional visit here to see what's new. . .

Yeah, that's the weird thing about this group. This is the ONLY group
where I've ever had to kill file some of the regulars. It went against the
grain to do it...and I delayed doing it for as long as I could...but once I
did...it was a much crisper group, with mostly freeware discussion.

So with filtering out the non-productive regulars, the obvious trolls, and
the provocative OT threads, it's possible to be left with a good freeware
discussion.

I'm not ready to give up on this group yet. :)

What, your only other group is alt.turn-the-other-cheek? You mustn't look at
any of the newsgroups I lurk at. I have found that any group I watch for
even a short period that has a significant contribution has trolls and flame
wars. The clutter here certainly has increased over the last 12 months.
Possibly you find (as I do) that in many of the other groups that I watch,
the flame wars and trolls are pathetic (ignorable) or mildly humourous to
watch while here they are simply nasty or stupid (or both). Hope it gets
better soon or I may have to join you with activating a killfile.

Oh I see flame wars all right! But in the other groups, it's not regular
"contributors" who are fighting. In this group, some of the contributors
fight and chit chat so it's harder to kill-file them. You think you'll
miss something by kill-filing them. But you really don't IMO. If someone
posts junk 70% of the time and good stuff 30% of the time, it's easy to
figure out what to do. :)

Ahh! I see your point very clearly now Jason.
