I am building a computer with a AsusA7N8X-VM/400 mobo and a 200 gig maxtor
200 gig drive (boot).

It will be using windows 2000 with service pack 4, but the windows disc
does not have any service packs on it to start with, I just have the
network admin update of service pack 4.

I understand win 2k after service pack 3 can cope with a > 137 gig disc
with some reg settings enabled.

Will I be able to install, update and then make the changes to the
registry, without causing any problems ?

Also what are all the reg settings I need to change ?

Tia.

After the install you can apply the reghack in this article.

48-Bit LBA Support for ATAPI Disk Drives in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=305098

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

I see you have a working solution. Better in my opinion to
slipstream SP4 into a source tree and install directly from the
updated source location if possible. "Cleaner" in some ways.

Also, if your boot/system partition is not the entire disk (not
recommended anyway), it might be that there is no problem justing
installing, then updating with SP4. But I am not certain of this for
your environment.

Thanks, you know what its like, I wanted to get things up and running
quick to test out new kit, I had things sitting for some time as I built a
new box while, working and life took its toll.

I have everything working ok now, but I think the creation of a install
disk/folder/partition with sp4 would be best all the way round.

I had created partitions to work in that were below 37 gig (to be safe), I
just thought the change from 24 to 48 bit would confuse the install. I had
an old drive I was going to use to do things (boot) with the 200 as slave
but it is slow and with CD and DVD drives a very fast drives ability would
be lost.

Now to find out about slipstreaming service packs and updated.

FYI; Even if you slipstream SP4 into your install Windows 2000 won't see the
entire drive till after the install and the registry hack.

I understand, I just think the less work I do with the wrong LBA size the
better.

Or does it not matter ?

If I keep everything below 137 gig, (or even 32 gig) can it get damaged
when I change the reg ?

L.

Maybe not but then it's just a waste of drive space.
