I have been getting regular freezes with Window Explorer.
The event viewer gives the following information:
Faulting application explorer.exe 6.0.2800.1106,faulting
module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.1217, fault address
0x00033aed.
I also note that I have four copies of ntdll.dll installed
in various places:
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallQ815021$, 653KB, 29/08/2002
C:\WINDOWS\system32, 639KB, 01/05/2003
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386, 653KB,29/08/2002
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache, 639KB, 01/05/2003

Are these multiple copies the problem?

Visit the Windows Update website and download all
the available "critical updates", if you have not done so.

Thanks for this advice, but I am up to date with updates including this
week's, but the 'freeze' has continued, twice so far today.

Are these multiple copies the problem?

No, the one in actual use is the one in Windows\System32.
The others are backups of the older file when you applied patches
or a cached copy when you boot up to speed up booting.

Freezes can be due to:
1. Background processes using too much CPU time eg Antivirus (see Task
Manager to see which process is using cpu time when the 'freeze'
happens)
2. Old or bad drivers eg video drivers
