frequent reboots when opening web pages

i have a brand new comp -
win xp - no updates as yet
nvidia geforce 6800 12kmb graphics
160g barracuda seagate hdd
liteon dvd-rw/cdrw
P4 3.0 ghz
1 gig geil memory
broadband cable telewest connnection 512k -usb connection
winxp built in firewall
avg AV (have tried McAfee and Norton on the previous installs)

everything works fine except it keeps rebooting every time i go to a web
page - i maybe go to 2 or 3 then it reboots itself. i can play Jedi Knight
academy on line, play hearts on line, email seems fine. i have reinstalled
freshly 4 times now and still this problem.

i can surf enough to find any info on this and i cant stay 'alive' on
windows update to get any service packs. i do have sp2 downloaded as a
standalone and am wondering if i should put this on but am bit wary of doing
so as did this at the last but one install of win xp and then the comp got
half way through the opening screen (with the little blue boxes running from
L to R) and then it froze. could not enter windows by any method, i.e. safe
mode, last known config - every option available and this forced me to
format and reinstall.

any advice greatly appreciated.

Do you have updated anti-virus software running?
Sounds like the virus which shuts you down after a minute or two online. I
can't remember the name of it, but it is trying to prevent you from
accessing Microsoft Windows Update.

If you don't have the update for that (for SP1), try installing SP2. It
includes this update.
