What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Make sure all your fans are working and the computer is free of dust.
Use an Air Duster to remove dust.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Do you leave your computer on 24/7?

Hope this helps.

Likely culprits are malware, or a crappy USB modem with a dodgy driver.

For the former visit http://malwarebytes.org

The latter should be replaced with an Ethernet modem/router, and the usb
driver uninstalled.
