I am trying to play a game that I installed from a CD. It will play properly,
for a short time, and then freeze. If I try to play from a previously loaded
part of the game, it may play further, but then freeze again. I have Radeon
8600. Help please.

Jo, it would help to let us know what game you are trying to play. ATI
had a Radeon 8500 but that's about six
years old. Radeon had a 9600 Series which is somewhat newer. If you are
trying to play one of the latest games I
don't think your Video Card is up to it.

Rich, I am playing an adventure game that I bought some time ago called
"Syberia". It is an older game, but I have some older than that, and they
work fine. Is there a way to update or upgrade my video card?

Jo, Ok, Siberia should not be a problem. Why don't you try installing a
new driver for the card. Go here
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeon-prer300-xp.html and
download the Catalyst Software Suite.
Hopefully you have broadband and not a dialup connection. After download
is completed go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall the ATI
Drivers. You can also rt click MyComputer>select Properties>Hardware>Device
Manager>Display Adaptor>Radeon 8500. rt click on it and select Uninstall.
Restart and tap F8 until you get a Menu. Select Safe Mode and when XP
loads up, install the new Catalyst driver.
Restart again and the new driver should be installed. You can upgrade your
Video Card.
If your computer has any age on it the latest video card would not
be practical. I would recommend the Radeon 9600XT.

Hi Rich - Thanks for all the help, but the game is still not working
properly. I've checked the CDs for any finger prints or scraches, but there
are not. This computer is about 6 years old and that may be the problem. I
played the game for about an hour last night and it was working okay, which
is a miracle, but then froze again.

Jo, after six years a few of your important components, CPU, Video Card,
Power Supply, Ram can get a little flaky. It
shows up under stress when you ask more of the system playing games. Make
sure all the fans are running and if you feel
comfortable with opening up the case and blowing it out with a can of air
and removing the Video Card and Ram and
reseating them that might help some. Disconnect the computer plug from
the wall socket or Surge protector before attempting this.

Thanks Rich. I'm a little bit leery about trying that myself, but a friend of
mine will do it for me.
