Hi,
I have an HP Compaq nx6120, running XP SP2.
Every time (just about) I try to boot the computer, it freezes on the log on
to windows page (sometimes it gives up earlier than this). Typically, if I
turn the laptop off, and leave it for several hours, it will work, but not
always. I have tried installing hdtune and running itm it reports all okay.
I have also tried reinstalling XP twice, to no avail. Now even IE6 has
managed to corrupt itself, so I attempted to reinstall XP for a third time.
This has halted 6 times now, and attempts to restart the computer from cold
are not succeeding.
I should also mention that, even when it is running, the laptop seems to be
missing two drivers, for a Multimedia Video Controller and a PCI bus,
although I am not using either of these (to my knowledge, as everything works
ok when I can get the thing to start).
HELP!!!!!!!!! (I am now using the wife's laptop, which is less than popular,
as u can imagine)

Hi,
Does your Laptop got overheated or very hot?.
Do you get the updates for your Drive4s from their vendors websites and for
the exact Hardware Specs?.
Look in the Event Viewer for Any Error Messages that can shed
some
light on the causer and post it back in your next Post.
On how to access the Event Viewer do the following:
- Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr click [OK]
There you will see three Options/Folders:
Application
System
Security
By clicking on each and look in the Right Pane/Window you will see a report
Log Double click on the error Message (X) to get more info and you can copy
and paste in your next post.

And on your Device Manger for any malfunctioning Devices, by right click My
Computer and select properties then click on Hardware Tab >> Click on Device
Manager Button >> Click on the [+] beside each device to Expand its tree and
see if there is Yellow Mark or Red (X).

Nass,

Thanks for your reply.
No, the laptop does not get hot - I frequently sit with it for hours on my
lap, and also hdtune did not suggest it was overheating.
As for the event viewer, there is over 500kb in both the application and
systems folders of msgs - u can't surely want me to paste all of these here?
There are lots of different types as well, so I can't even guess which one u
might find helpful
In Devic e manager, there are currently 3 devices showing with yellow marksa
- the Multimedia Video Controller, the PCI Device, and a new one, the Texas
Instruments PCIxx21 Integrated Flash Media Controller. This last is normally
okay, but as I said earlier, I have just reinstalled XP, so this may be
missing from the CD. As for updates, I have never myself tried to find
updates to these (I don't even know where to start), and normally get the
automatice MS updates once a week.

Hi,
Please, try to install the driver for the chipset/MOBO from the Mobo
manufacturer website.
Do you have NVIDIA Video card?.
Go here and select your Laptop serial number to get the latest drivers for
it and install it.

Hi there,
not quite sure what u mean by this chipset/MOBO - what is MOBO? Also, there
are 4 updates listed for the BIOS on the HP site, whic one do I choose?
I don't think I have a NVIDIA card, no such thing is listed in the Belarc
advisor. Just a Intel 915GM video driver, which I have loaded, together with
the media card driver, which has got rid of the third missing driver
(unfortunately your suggestion below for the flash media made everything
worse and I had to reinstall the media card driver).
The missing drivers 'Multimedia Video Controller' and 'PCI Device' do not
appear anywhere on the HP site for downloads and drivers for my machine, and
I do not know if they are part of some other driver?
As for the red cross messages, there are not many, and none that appear to
have anything to do with the drivers nor the freexing (or hanging) of the
machine. Here are two from the application list

I found that my automatic MS update had not been working so have spent all
day loading these 63 updates, with of course multiple hangs on restarts and
hunting for the missing driver, so apologies for not replying sooner.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi,

We need to repair the updates engine first, then see what the updates can
eliminate!.
Download and use the Autoruns to find any unwanted start ups & Remove them:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx
Try to make less running process in the background, just the necessary ones
the extra application remove them from start up.
By the way How much pageFile you have set?, does the system take care of it
or you set it up?.
You will find the page file here:
Right click "My Computer" select Properties, click on Advanced then click on
Settings Under Performance Option.
On the Performance Options click on Advanced Tab then on Change under
Virtual Memory (you will see already the Size for the page file).
On Virtual memory you can set the page file manually or let windows deal
with it.

Open a run command and type in:

5. ran spybot
6. ran onecare scan
7. ran ca scan
8. at this stage, noticed that the two previously missing drivers were not
showing in the management screen under my computer, but instead the IEEE1394
TI connection, the TI PCIxx21 Flash Media and the SDA Std Compliant SD Host
Controller were marked with yellow question marks (they have since
disappeared, and I have the usual two back).
9. skipped the avast stuff, as the system seems to be clean (but may try
that tonight)
10. installed windiag and ran it for 13 passes, no problems reported
11. reinstalled the video chipset from the Application and Recovery Disk.
couldn't find anything about VIdeo and Nietwork Interface card.

And, I still have the same two drivers missing as before - what next??

Hi there,
not quite sure what u mean by this chipset/MOBO - what is MOBO? Also, there
are 4 updates listed for the BIOS on the HP site, whic one do I choose?

I found that my automatic MS update had not been working so have spent all

hunting for the missing driver, so apologies for not replying sooner.

Hi Nass,

The story so far.

I have in order :-
1. installed Autoruns, the only thing I have going in startup is DVDcheck.
2. checked page file it is set to custom, the size is 756, with range from
756 to 1512, recommended at 754.
3. the regsvrs, most went okay, but the following did not
4. Skipped the IE stuff as IE7 has now been installed, but I did
check/uncheck the boxes u suggested
5. ran spybot
6. ran onecare scan
7. ran ca scan
8. at this stage, noticed that the two previously missing drivers were not

By the looks of it, your update engine is working, hence you installed IE7!.
Try this:
Right click "My Computer" and select properties, click Hardware Tab then
click Device Manager.
There click on View and select Show Hidden devices, what you can see now?.
Right click on the Computer Icon with the name of your machine and click on
Scan for Hardware.
If you still having problem, try to perform a Repair install, please back up
your Data on removable storage, also UNINSTALL IE7 before trying the Repair
procedure.

Hi Nass,

Did what u suggest in My computer with show hidden clicked I see two extra
lists - non plug and play, and storage volumes. there is nothing special
shown on these. when i select the scan for new hardware, it brings up the two
missing drivers Multimedia Video Controller and PCI Device, but can't find
the drivers on any of my installation disks.

Following on from your previous mail, looked on the itrc forums website and
found a thread suggesting the problem I have with freezing is a common one
among owners of this model laptop. One person had found the solution was to
liftt the right-hand cornere, which worked for someone else as well. Didn't
work when I next had to restart.

I do not want to perform another repair/install, as I have already done this
twice for this problem and it has not solved it. If I could just get these
two drivers installed, I would accept that. Are they hidden in one or more of
the others shown on the download drivers page in HP, as they are not shown
specifically? Should I install all of the drivers shown on this page (apart
from the updated ones) - there are about 20 drivers listed on this page for
my model and OS.

Thanks

Hi Cookie,
Too late here, will see what we can do Tomorrow as I need to refresh my
memory and try to pick up the right one, hopefully for you to download.

What happen if you Disable them in device manager?, does the issue still
persist?.

Hi Cookie,
Here the link for your Notebook specs (XP Home SP2) Only:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...esId=457951&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1098
Navigate to this "Driver - Storage" option and download the Texas and the
Media Card reader.
Also these drivers:

Hi Nass,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, have been busy and sidetracked
with other things, and the laptop has been working. Have done everything you
suggested by name below, but stopped at the 'then try the installation for
the other drivers/apps' - is this really necessary, as I still have the two
missing drivers I have had the whole time?
It seem the trick with lifting the rigt-hand corner of the laptop on startup
seems to work, at least the machine starts up.
It also seems the only solution is to either get the motherboard replaced or
to purchase a new laptop, neither solution is at the moment possible
financially.
Thanks for trying
