Freezing and Skipping of Big AVI Files

I'm putting together a large movie with pictures and large AVI files (for
maximum quality) and my computer often freezes up. Some of the clips skip and
every click of the mouse is followed by a delay in reaction. It seems like my
computer is fighting to handle everything. I have shut down all running
programs ie. anti-virus etc and it is still an issue. I have a Compaq
Presario with 1GB and 200G of storage and a 2.4Ghz AMD processor. The hard
drive is 80% full. The graphics card is 128MB.

Do I need to upgrade something for my computer to keep up?? Do I need 2GB or
a new graphics card?

Any help would really be appreciated.

Well a HDD that's 80% full is never a good thing but having 40GB free isn't
all that bad.
The free fix would be to try creating your project in pieces and bringing
them all together in the end (tutorial on my website) but this will eat up
that HDD space rather quickly.

Wojo,

Good to hear from you again. If I did want to spend some money, what would
you suggest?

Then I would suggest a larger harddrive.
I am currently running with 2 - 240GB drives to keep up with all the
different things I am into now. Obviously that is more than most people need
but adding one 240GB drive is inexpensive and probably the best option for
you at the moment.

Wojo,

Thankyou very much. I'm going to do it.
