Machine usually "died" within a few minutes of turning on. It went from
normal working to a frozen state in which keys and mouse had no effect, and
sidebar gadget showed zero CPU usage. Only solution was to hold power button
down, and then restart in Safe Mode, whereupon everything (that works in Safe
Mode) was fine.
Didn't always happen, about one time in five the machine worked properly for
hours until shut down normally.
This problem first appeared after installing Service Pack 1, and disappeared
when I did a System Restore to before the SP1 installation.
Should I try SP1 again? Any other suggestions?
System information:

Notebook PC from Evesham Technology (now sadly gone bust)
Processor AMD Turion 64x2 Mobile Technology TL-56 1.81 Ghz
